BASIC TRAILER HANDLING & TOWING A TRAILER ON THE ROAD – Preparation for the DSA B + E Road Test.
This is a one and a half day course. The first day is ‘Basic Trailer Handling’ which candidates are recommended to attend if they have less than 3 years experience. The second day, candidates are split into pairs for either the morning or afternoon session and will practice going through the DOT test schedule with the instructor.

Please note that this course does not include ‘Off Road Driving this is a separate one day course.

For trainees who are experienced trailer handlers and require a refresher to prepare them for the test we can offer a half day session. If candidates are very inexperienced, it may be advisable to practice with a vehicle and trailer prior to the course. As with many other practical skills, there is nothing better than experience and practice. Extra tuition can be organised if required, either for individuals on a 1:1 basis, or for groups.

Courses are held at The Duchy College near Callington. For full groups, the courses can be held at clients sites, provided there are suitable facilities available. These include a large area for reversing and driving practice – preferably tarmac or concrete but not grass, a dry area for classroom work and also for any practical work on trailers.

Candidates are advised to bring their own vehicles, as it is better to use equipment you are familiar with. You will also need to provide your own equipment for the test. You now need to use a box trailer for the test not a flat bed, so that mirrors have to be used during manoeuvres. If it is not possible to bring your own vehicle, we may able to make an extra vehicle and trailer available for the training days (strictly by prior arrangement). You will be expected to use your own vehicle and trailer for the test. Please confirm with the DSA test centre that your vehicle meets the required specification including fitment of suitable mirrors.

After the course, candidates should be well prepared and confident to apply for their ‘Practical Towing Test (B + E)’; the instructor will be able to advise you about how to apply.

The DOT (B + E) test will take place at your local DSA HGV Test Centre. The costs for the test are not included in the training fee (fees are around £90 per person for a test on a week day, more at the weekend). You will need to book the test yourself. The test lasts for approximately one hour, and includes: an off – road reverse manoeuvre, a controlled stop, uncoupling and coupling, and driving on the road. Candidates are expected to take their own vehicles for the test; specifications will be available from the test centre when booking.
