Keeping Sheep and Goats
Who is the Course for?
Anyone who keeps or intends to keep a small number of sheep and goats, and who is a novice or relative novice in keeping these animals
Course Outline
1 day. Morning classroom session, afternoon session on small holding/farm No formal assessment.
The course covers:
Applying for a holding number and other legal requirements record keeping
Identifying poor health
Common parasites, treatments and pasture rotation scheme
Common foot problems - treatment and prevention strategy
Good fencing practice and bio-security
Herd health schemes
Housing to meet animals needs
Estimating body weight and scoring body condition and relating this to health and breeding
Administering routine treatments
Selecting cull ewes and breeding rams
Identifying bad quality food and the risks of feeding pulp and high level of concentrates
Common feeding regimes for pregnant and barren sheep/goats
What should you bring to the course? You do not have to bring anything with you. Wear practical clothing suitable for a farm environment.
