Keeping Backyard Poultry – ‘Healthy Hens’
Who is the Course for?
Anyone who keeps or intends to keep a small number of backyard poultry, and who is a novice or relative novice in keeping and breeding chickens, geese, turkeys and similar birds.
Course Outline 1 evening - 3˝ hours. Classroom based course with no formal assessment.
The course covers:
• Bird digestion and different feeds
• Basic housing and environmental needs including making a coop and run vermin proof
• Pecking orders and methods for preventing pecking
• Signs of illness
• Common ecto- and endoparasities
• Choosing the best preventative and curative parasite treatments
• Effects of day length
• Moulting
• Brooding including the needs of brooding birds
• Distinguishing between empty and embryonated eggs
• Bird behaviour - introducing new birds
• Rules and regulations
What should you bring to the course? Classroom Course – you do not have to bring anything with you.

All trainees must be over 16 years of age. Persons with certain ailments or on certain medication may not be able to take part in the practical sessions.
