How to decide whether to take a Lantra Awards chainsaw course or an NPTC chainsaw course
Lynher Training offers the follow basic chainsaw training courses:
• Lantra SSC (Sector Skills Council) Maintenance and Cross Cutting and Felling trees up to 200mm (8 inch) diameter – 4 day course with integrated assessments for the maintenance and cross cutting and the felling sections.
• Lantra/NPTC Maintenance and Cross Cutting and Felling trees up to 380mm (15 inch) diameter – 5 day Lantra training course with NPTC assessment on a separate day.
The NPTC route is the industry standard for professional forestry and arboriculture. It is normal industry best practice to undergo a relevant period of recognized training prior to the assessment. This training is provided by Lantra Awards and the certificates of basic training provided bear the NPTC logo in recognition that the courses are developed specifically as a pre-requisite to the NPTC assessments.
All candidates are also advised at the end of the course as to their standard and given a summary of any areas to concentrate on prior to the NPTC assessments. Candidates receive a certificate of attendance for the training course. If they pass the assessment they receive a NPTC ID card.
As the NPTC course is 5 days and involves separate assessments and considerable extra costs. It is also worth considering the practicalities of down - time for the assessments (approx. half day per unit) and the logistics of organising time, equipment, venues and transport to fit in with the assessments.
The Lantra SSC route is now the standard for industries not reliant on commercial forestry or arboriculture and is ideal for Council workers, landscape gardeners, building trades, agricultural use, etc. Lantra SSC courses are HSE accepted. Candidates that pass the assessments within the “Integrated Training and Assessment” course receive a Lantra certificate of competence (with Photo ID card). This covers candidates for Maintenance and Cross Cutting initially, with the further option of continuing with felling trees up to 200mm (8”) diameter at felling height. The advantage and popularity of this course is clear, due to the assessments being included during the course, both from a cost and a logistical point of view.
The Lantra 4 day courses have the limitation of only being valid for trees up to a maximum diameter of 200mm. The NPTC equivalent is for trees of up to 380mm (15”) from which point the candidates could progress to larger trees and / or tree climbing units.
Should the Lantra SSC route of Integrated Training and Assessment be taken, then it is possible to convert to the NPTC route at a later date. This has the benefit of the candidates having a period of consolidation prior to going forward onto the NPTC route – which can sometimes be a little daunting for a novice user.
